There are a wealth of individuals and organizations around the world seeking to uphold and promote human rights. They are fighting for the lives of millions of the world’s most disadvantaged. They are fighting to hear the voices of those too hungry to speak.
Among those standing up for the Right to Food is ActionAid whose aim is to fight poverty worldwide. HungerFREE is the global campaign of ActionAid International, working to hold governments accountable for their commitment to halve hunger by 2015.
The HungerFREE campaign is particularly timely as the food crisis worsens. ActionAid is calling on world leaders to:
- Boost purchasing power of the poor and marginalized through locally effective social security measures
- Boost small farmers’ capacity to produce food with subsidy programs and stopping the diversion of land from local food production into other uses such as biofuels.
- Prioritize women, who produce up to 80% of the food in developing countries
- Cancel debts, increase aid, and restructuring trade rules to support and protect small farmers.
