Barefoot Against Poverty

Date and Time: 10th Decemeber 2010

Location: Global

Description: 1.4 billion people are still living in extreme poverty, their right to a healthy living, free from want, being denied. Taking inspiration from Nelson Mandela, we believe that the world would be a better place if every one walked a mile in another’s shoes.  By going Barefoot Against Poverty (www.barefootagainstpoverty.org), we are asking people to take a first step for human rights, thinking about people who barely have food to put on their table, let alone shoes to put on their feet.

16 Days of Activism for No Violence Against Women and Children

AddThis Social Bookmark Button

Date and Time: November 25 to 10 Decemeber 2010

Location: Global

Description: The 16 Days of Activism for No Violence Against Women and Children is an international campaign that takes place every year from 25 November (International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women) to 10 December (International Human Rights Day). The period includes Universal Children’s Day and World AIDS Day.

During this time, the international community runs a 16 Days of Activism Campaign to make people aware of the negative impact of violence on women and children and to act against abuse. We are firmly committed to lead a coordinated effort to sustain the campaign into its next decade.

Every year, government, civil-society organisations and the business sector work together to broaden the impact of the campaign. By supporting this campaign, people around the world have also helped to increase awareness of abuse and build support for victims and survivors of abuse.

Jonathan Mann Award for Global Health and Human Rights

AddThis Social Bookmark Button

Date and Time: Closing date Friday January 14 2010

Location: Washington D.C

Description:  The Jonathan Mann Award for Global Health and Human Rights has been established to honour Jonathan Mann and help to call continued attention to the vital links between health and human rights. The Award is presented annually to a leading practitioner in health and human rights. The award comes with a financial prize to allow its recipient a measure of freedom to pursue his or her work in the area of global health and human rights.

According to the Council, throughout his career, Dr. Mann focused public attention on the fact that prejudice and discrimination help drive the AIDS epidemic, and that discrimination against those at risk of infection fuels the epidemic further.

The award will be presented during the Global Health Council's Annual International Conference in Washington, D.C., United States.
